Gibson County Special School District is proud to announce that two members of the GCSSD community have received prestigious honors from the Tennessee School Boards Association (TSBA). Juliet Barker has been named the 2026 Northwest District Student Achievement Award winner, while Joetta White has been selected as the 2026 Northwest District Volunteer Recognition Award winner.
Each year, TSBA recognizes one student from each of its nine districts through its Student Achievement Award program. The award honors students who have distinguished themselves through academic achievement, community leadership, and engagement.
Barker has maintained a 4.0 GPA and earned a 33 on the ACT while taking on numerous leadership roles within her school and across the state. She serves as president of her school’s FCCLA chapter and was elected by more than 2,000 Tennessee FCCLA members to serve as State Vice President of Community Service and Public Relations.
Her leadership also extends beyond FCCLA. Barker led the transition of her school’s debate club into an affiliated Debate Team, serving as president while recruiting and mentoring approximately 20 student members. She has also served as a Student Ambassador, lead editor of the school newspaper, and a communications intern for a Tennessee gubernatorial campaign. At Tennessee Girls State, Barker served as Nationalist Party Chairwoman and was recognized as “Best Citizen.”
TSBA also recognizes one outstanding school volunteer from each of its nine districts annually. White earned the Northwest District Volunteer Recognition Award for her longstanding commitment to GCSSD’s agriculture department, FFA program, students, and teachers.
White consistently gives her time to support livestock projects, greenhouse operations, school events, FFA practices, and competitive teams. She helps lead programs such as Kid Camp, which introduces younger students to a variety of agricultural experiences, and organized the annual 4th Grade Agriculture Day. She also serves with the Gibson County Jr. Livestock Association, helping provide meaningful agricultural learning opportunities for students throughout the community.
White’s dedication was especially evident this year when she provided additional support to the agriculture program during a teacher’s medical recovery. Her efforts helped ensure students, animals, and program activities continued to receive the care and attention needed throughout the teacher’s absence.
As Northwest District winners, Barker and White will now be considered for TSBA’s statewide honors. One of the nine district Student Achievement Award recipients will be selected for the Statewide Student Achievement Award, which includes a $2,000 scholarship from TSBA and an additional $2,000 scholarship from TSBA business affiliate Energy Systems Group. One district volunteer will also receive the Statewide School Volunteer Recognition Award, which includes a $1,000 grant for the school of the recipient’s choice.
The statewide recipients will be recognized at the TSBA Annual Convention in November.
